what's up?

glowing

1963 buick le sabre

why is it they say that women don't sweat...they glow? bullshit. i was definitely sweating the other night at ruby's. not that it was that hot, but more that it felt humid. probably should have just worn shorts and a tank top, and expose more skin. levis just don't "breathe" even if they are made of cotton.

i purposely waited until later in the evening to hit this show, hoping it would cool off enough to persuade me away from the fans at home. and so i could start taking some sunset shots, with summer officially coming to an end, and the sun going bye bye earlier and earlier.

there were many cars i walked by because of their location, or owners parked in chairs in front of them. running out of room on my hard drive makes me more picky i guess.

i came back to this one before i left, and probably should have just kept shooting while the sun went south. the hood was so reflective, and the colors changing in the sky just glowed off of it. this shot isn't picking up the rose colors that i saw later.

sleeping beauty

1956 chevy

so i'm recovering from my little surgery thing yesterday. for a minor thing, why did they knock me all the way the hell out...general anesthesia? wheee heeee. slept all day. my better half kept watch over me, and hasn't really let me do much of anything today. ya, he's a keeper.

i went out with him to the mall this morning, to pick up his glasses, then he took me to my mom's to pick up my car. and i ended up just wanting to lay down on her couch for a while, but unable to sleep.

after a couple of hours, i drove back home, and didn't do much else. so i guess i won't be doing much shooting tomorrow, in spite of a couple of shows that i'd really like to go to. my son wants me to take a picture of he and his girlfriend and his puppy by a lake, but i really don't know yet if i want to drive there. and that puppy is growing so quickly...

here's another tribe car. haven't seen it before. he'd just had it pinstriped the day before, he said, as i was shooting the back wheel cover, in all it's freshly pinstriped glory.

his son was sleeping inside it, though you can't see him from this angle. supposedly, the kid had just gotten home ten minutes before the guy left for the show before 5 in the morning.

bitch

1960 cadillac deville

what is it about guys and high maintenance women? you all know the ones i'm talking about—the ones that dress up for a day at disneyland and wear high heels, then spend all day bitching about how their feet hurt. the ones that the guys want to have, then spend the rest of their lives regretting. she's fine as long as she doesn't say anything, but then she does, and has nothing to say. and the claws come out if she thinks you're looking at other chicks.

i wonder if this car is like that. reine has been favoring his lincoln for the last bunch of months. has she been suffering from imaginary aches and pains all year? she's been a kept woman. hidden away in some garage in never-never land, getting nips and tucks, and apparently tipped. on the hubcaps. i noticed.

thanks for bringing her out to play for the day, reine. i did miss her, even if she is a bitch to photograph. j/k.

winning

1963 buick riviera

went to the uptown show today. three times. at 6am-ish, 10am-ish, and 2pm-ish. as i said, it's up the street. got so damn hot as the morning went on, just had to stop and go home to sit in front of the fan for a while. not so bad in the shade, but i still felt icky after a while each time. too hot.

anyway, the so cal tribe guys seem to always be the first ones there, and get their choice of spots. so the group parked it over by that smelly cigar bar. but it did stay pretty shady most of the day for them. reine even brought his bitchin' cadillac, which i have not seen in months—thanks dude. i'll post one soon.

their website says this buick belongs to one of their newest members. my mom had a riviera when i was a kid, and i learned to drive in it. not this model year, but close enough, and definitely not this cool.

end of the day, after the awards had been given out, i walked back past the cars and they were gathering for a group picture under their banner. the owner was there holding a trophy, so i assume he won something for this baby. congrats, guys.

lincoln's second term

1963 lincoln continental

rubys was pretty busy tonight. was interesting to see what must have been a whole car club drive up one of the rows, expecting to park all together, when there were not so many spaces open. a little shuffling, a few people encouraged to move their chairs out of spaces, others leaving, somehow they all seemed to eventually settle into place. then to shuffle again to get closer together.

saw several people i hadn't seen in a while. always nice that they remember me and take the time to chat. and many cars that i've seen, many times, in many shows. lots i've already taken pictures of before, but always looking to see them in a different spot, position, light. they all pose so patiently, if only all the pesky people would stop walking through my shots. ah, well. such is the nature of the beast. count to ten, sometimes twenty.

so another post of this car. again, with lens flares. always buffed to perfection, in it's relative simplicity, compared to those bombs. i kinda miss his other car, which he says is somewhere else, in storage or being worked on, or both.

trick or treat?

1960 cadillac de ville

another from the halloween show. an old fav, this one. his parking spot really sucked. too many cars, too many people. there was a car parked in the aisle in front of this one, with very little room for people to pass by, or for me to set up my tripod. thank goodness for a wide angle lens.

winkin' blinkin' lincoln

1963 lincoln continental

so my friend reine has several cars, or so i've heard. i've seen this one a couple of times before, but have never shot it for whatever reason.

after meeting up with him inside the broiler, he'd asked if i could take pictures of this one. i took several, but there was a car next to it at the time, and the owner or someone was sitting on the bumper of his car, and didn't get the clue and move.

this is a later shot, after i'd already put my stuff away and was preparing to leave. my better half pointed out that the sun was beginning to go down, and to look how the light was hitting it. i noticed that the other car was gone...so out comes the camera stuff again.

i do think these sunset shots were much better, and this was my favorite one.

twilight deville

i don't think there is a bad angle to be had of this caddie. you'll find it several times on this blog, if you look for it. one of my favs, and one of my first cars i shot when i started doing this mess.

my better half just got home and peeked over my shoulder while i was working on this. he especially liked the reflection of the clouds and evening sky on the hood. so, in his style, i cranked it a bit more than i had intended originally. but it does bring out the sunset colors that are so striking, and i popped the damn ghost flames that have always just eluded my lens in all the other shots.

took this at the last show of the year 2010, at ruby's in whittier. the halloween show. oh dear me, i went straight from work, dressed as a leopard. perhaps i can't pull that costume off anymore, and it should stay locked away in the box in the garage. anyway, i can see my distorted reflection, as always, in the bumpers of the cars i shot that day, so there is some record of the last time i intend to wear it.

ruby's show should be starting up on the first friday in may...always a good turnout and variety. can't wait.

how could you leave this behind?

1959 chevy impala

so check out so cal tribe member's cars: reine's 1960 cadillac coupe de ville; danny's 1959 chevy impala; and ron's 1963 chevy suburban. was this back before they started their club? i dunno. they usually are together whenever i see them.

this shot from the broiler, in july. the back end is just delicious. below is a shot from a long time ago...actually the first time i ever visited the broiler...but with the tire thinga-ma-bobber on the back, and i don't know why i never posted it before now:

’59 chevy impala

while the wheel thingy is designed to blend into the lines of the car, and is all chromed out, as well as serving to hide an ugly spare tire, it just kills the curves of the trunk. i vote for leaving it off, it's more pleasing to my eyes. but then, it isn't my car, so do what you want. lol.

<begin rant>

i stopped by the broiler tonight. second time in three weeks. big disappointment in turnout. two weeks ago i didn't even bother to get out of the car; today, i figured since i drove all the way out there, i might as well take a few shots, since i was in no hurry. only a handful of cars, and one that i really wanted drove off just before i got back over to it. high fives to the diehards that were there. thanks for saving me from another fruitless drive.

one of the owners said it's too cold. well, what a bunch of wusses. put on a coat why don't you? at least it wasn't raining. sure i know tomorrow is turkey day, but that was no excuse for the other week. and it doesn't only happen at bob's now; just about any evening show, except the one in garden grove is pretty sparse. didn't seem to bother you all last winter.

i think i'm just torqued up because the holidays are coming and they are my least favorite time of year, with forced good will and smiles, and i hate going shopping.

so i'm mostly going to have to hit the weekend shows during the day or sift through my hundreds of pictures i've taken this past year. could be worse.

<end rant>

have a happy thanksgiving anyway. lol.
