what's up?

family affair

i've seen this wagon at a couple of shows now. i liked where it was parked here at the broiler, in a sea of chevys. was hard to get a clean shot of it, as there seemed to constantly be people ogling it. just had to wait patiently, and shoot quick to get it.

need a ladder to get the glitter/airbrushed roof i suppose. i do like the pinstripe curlies on it.

better half's birthday today. he doesn't want cake; pretty sure he wants pie... >:)

buick

this one is interesting. guessing a '38 buick. the color combo really caught my eye. not sure the modern rims are really working, but they do match the color scheme.

saw it at the viejitos ela show at the broiler in august. such a good show. way too hot. wish there were more shows about this time of year, before the real possibility of rain, but sunny, cool and puffy clouds. way more tolerable.

-----

got my car serviced yesterday, and it was sprinkling rain here and there, so skipped a show that may or may not have happened because of the weather. that, and once i got back home, didn't want to go back out, which is typical.

feeling like taking pictures today, but looking at the calendar, not much going on except small local shows. pretty much what i like best...fewer people in my way.

thinking of stopping by a monthly show in la habra, to see if it's bombs or hot rods. if hot rods or muscle cars, will probably just continue on by and get some shopping done. otherwise, there's always lakewood on a sunday afternoon — never know what will show up, but there's a costco there too.

anyone know if there's a show at the broiler this friday? i've heard about it, but haven't been.

-----

a real hell of a month coming up health-wise. really hating getting stuck with needles. not looking forward to these tests, but want answers more, so i'll just practice bursts of profanities at work to prepare.

fishin’

here's one from the summer, from the viejitos ela show, which i got way too busy to play with more shots. i'd spent the morning in chevy heaven in the back lot of the broiler. had gotten hot, so i was taking a break in the shade of the overhang.

the owner of this car pulled in with this fleetline on a trailer. too precious to drive, i guess, and i don't really blame him. well, he backed it down the ramp, and it just sat there for a bit. so, of course, i went over and had it all to myself. at least until someone told him to move it and the trailer out of the way. and people were mostly ignoring it for the time being.

pretty simple lines. just that fishin’ pole for decoration.

i'll take one, please.

line ’em up

starting off with a big double bird to the 5 freeway...took two-and-a-half hours to get home today. no good reason for the backup. started at the 133 and went to about ball road, then just started moving again. so wtf? was already tired, and that didn't help things.

one from the east la viejitos show at the broiler in august. don't know how i got this view, without anyone standing arbitrarily in the shot. patience pays off sometimes. why i didn't also shoot the dodge behind it, i can't remember. not even the hood ornament. must have been off to take a break.

by this time in the morning, it was getting pretty hot, and the sun was blazing down. had taken a few breaks, hiding in the covered area by the restaurant, bumming some ice water from a waitress.

i liked the pale mint green of this car. and the fox tail. i've had a few i picked up in canada back in the late nineties. packed away in storage for now. wonder if they're shedding down to the leather yet. had a beautiful white one with a black tip, but it was way too big to use for my keys; had to use a racoon tail for that, until it fell apart. i digress...

liked the restrained use of pinstriping in a darker shade of green and white. just some random swirls.not too much. i think i shot some close ups, but i'll have to look for them when i'm not so tired.  i think some also spelled out "poco loco."

speaking of...off to zeebers now...

time to chat

found my way to the viejitos ela show this morning. really didn't want to get out of bed, but expected it to be hot later. and i was awake anyway.

at eight in the morning the lot was already pretty full of bombs. just what the doctor ordered. hurrying, but not hurrying, racing the sun that always wins.

had to take a couple of breaks back under the roof of the drive-in overhang. nice breeze there. waitress even gave me a cup of water. thanks so much.

i was about ready to head home when i was over by this car. liked the hood ornament. the hood was up, so generally would have skipped out on the car. then the owner came over and started talking about other car shows i should check out. big shows in vegas. i happen to be going there week after next on business, but no big shows going on while i'm out there. oh well. i'll see if i can get to the local club shows.

he closed the hood for me, and i shot a few while we continued talking.

really the only one who talked to me, aside from another guy taking pictures with his cell phone, or the guy who said he liked my felix chevrolet shirt. so, i'll post this one first.

san pedro early tomorrow. i gotta get some sleep...and another hard drive.

spotlight

so i drove out to the broiler on wednesday, for a change. haven't really been able to get out to many shows on weekdays anymore, so i was hopeful.

i arrived just slightly early, and there really weren't too many cars there. not even the old regulars. saw a couple of people i knew though, so that was nice to catch up a little.

so i shot what cars that were there. then sat on the wall and read email and news on my phone. ran into someone who follows me on flickr, and that's always fun. i'd seen his pictures of cars from previous weeks, which is probably why i chose to be hopeful that there would be cars there to shoot.

anyway, each time i decided it was about time to pack it up, a car or two would drive in. mostly not what i like to shoot. they told me the low riders come in later, and that's what started showing up. not pretty or interesting ones, just plain, old cars. and most of them headed to the back of the lot. ya, and they don't look all that friendly, so buh bye.

i liked this chevy. showing its age, but not adorned with unnecessary details. no pinstripes, at least that i saw. liked the hood ornament too, with the pitting.

really should have stayed until sunset. need to eff with this camera in low light more. still prefer my old camera.

---

looking forward to the uptown show in the morning. hoping it will be more coordinated this time. maybe even more of the lowriders will be coming back after the idiocy the organizers pulled a few years ago. i heard they expect about 400 cars. crossing my fingers. better half will be there off and on too, in between taking care of his mom's needs.

and meeting a guy who's buying one of my pictures from the fair. so if you see me just standing around the main intersection around 11:30, come check it out.

goldie but goodie

i used to go to the broiler most every wednesday for a couple of years. and then my office moved farther south, and it made the drive too difficult with traffic to get there so often.

and when i do get there, most often there are only the regulars there, or some low rider clubs, or simply not much.

now the back lot has the back exit closed off and it's dark back there. and there's just a different vibe with the people that are there.

probably all in my head. they never know what to think about me anyway.

i just felt like getting out and shooting some pics, so endured the traffic last month, and drove on up there. it was kinda busy up at the very front. saw a few people i kinda know and said hi.

saw this truck drive in and park while i was shooting some other stuff. saw that the hood had gone up and the owner was showing off the engine to someone. thought i wouldn't be taking a picture of it at that point, and went back to whatever it was i was doing.

by the time i considered it again, the hood was down and no one was around. so luckily i got a few shots.

clean truck, interesting details. the truck bed is all padded, and i doubt very useful for carrying anything. i took a shot of that, but it's late and i don't have it ready to post...maybe i'll add it later.

wasn't daylight savings time yet, so it got dark early. the truck was golden, but around back under the fluorescents, it kinda goes green. so the weird, not stock tail lights look a little off.

ok, i'm done for now. my legs hurt from sitting all day at work. waiting for the weekend, hoping to get to a couple of shows, though it would be more fun if my better half could go. he's hoping he can join me next month at chicano park...hoping his sister can stay with his mom that weekend.

maybe a doctor can remove them?

i had carried my camera bag with me for a couple of days this week. drove over to chik-fil-a on tuesday after work, took a stroll around the lot, but didn't even take my bag out of the car. oh well. probably was too early, but i haven't seen anything there like they used to get at the fuddruckers location. is it the location or the people running it?

wednesday, the traffic was moving pretty well, so i drove up to the broiler. it's a lot different feel than a couple of years ago. not as much there, the back exit is blocked off. looks like one of the local car dealers parks some cars back there. and that's where the low rider guys go as well, back in the darker parts of the lot. probably better that way. they don't come across as the friendlier types, and seem to care less about people seeing their rides than they do for hanging out and smoking skunk.

trying out a new camera bag my better half got me for valentine's day. nice bag. just not sure it's very practical for car shows. i'll have to try it a few more times before i can say one way or another. good for travel on a plane in the overhead. ya, that's it—a good excuse to fly somewhere, to test if it's travel worthy.

anyway, i took a few pictures in the hour i was there. saw a few people i haven't seen in a while. sorry if i was a bit abrupt. i haven't been out much, and have had a long week at work, even by hump day.

i liked this old car when i first saw it, but by the time i got around to shooting it, it had broken out in homies. and machine guns. i don't get it. but then, i don't get my mom's fondness for dolls either. but why put them all over the hood? bad enough when they are parked in front and back, but this is just overkill. i think i'll pass these cars by from now on. just showing this one because i liked the light on it.

i sure enough would like to knock them off there, but this is how it was, so there you go. maybe i should have just shot the hood ornament...

nighty night. at least its friday. i'd say at least next week is only a three-day work week, but i will be having to jam a full week's work into a shorter time. here's to hoping everyone is out of town, and traffic will get me home in under two hours. i doubt it.

so the sprinkly rain the last couple of days doesn't bode well for weekend shows. i don't have any one particular planned to go, so if its not raining, i may go see what's out there. or i could just as happily dip into my digital garage all weekend and try to post a few.

this car is from back in january at the broiler and the infamous red skies the camera picks up there. must be the lighting in the neighborhood. or martian atmosphere. what else could that purple thing be in the sky? invasion coming?

who's afraid of the dark?

harley davidson

tired. friday. done. another busy week.

quick post. i don't do many motorcycles. they just don't get me going. but the occasional one does stop me momentarily.

this one was it's own flashlight. paint job was nothing special, with ubiquitous raider nation stuff emblazoned here and there.

what i did like was the engraving on the chrome parts and the ostrich leather custom seats. i liked the details better than the overall bike, and that can't be good.

but i just thought i'd share. another night time experiment with the newer camera. still not lovin' it like my a700s.
